Psyche
casta aka Common Bagworm
This is a specie I tried to raise last year but ended up not complete. This year turned the same. Well not exactly the same, but the complete process turned bad. Well that’s what you think after seeing the pictures and my text. The fact is this what happened:
I found 3 bagworms feeding on Quercus robur and decided to bring them home. Just one the caterpillar went out and I took a photo, but later it never came out. I thought to myself that they might have gone dead. When I came home again after 1 month, I found myself 2 still in shape, and other too, but with the blackish moth outside. I have searched and commented that this species have a strange life cycle (well I am starting to get used to strange life cycles). The female is exactly like the larvae, and the male is the one that flies. I never touched that box again until some days ago when I noticed more than 100 baby Psyche casta. So this is what I think that happened. The left 2 bagworms were female, and the one was the male. Since it was trapped in the box, it breed the females, and died. Later the baby Psyche casta emerged.
Therefore, this is my post. I’m photographing the whole process of 100 Psyche casta Which I’ll probably release half or more in wild, which will be, hopefully a future post in my other blog with better details and better photos.
Esta espécie é a mesma que tentei criar no ano passado, mas não consegui completar. Este ano acabou quase pelo mesmo. Bem, não exactamente, pois depois de verem as fotos e lerem o que tenho a dizer sobre esta espécie, isto foi o que aconteceu:
Eu encontrei 3 lagartas a alimentarem-se de Quercus robur e decidi trazere-las ambas para casa. Apenas uma delas a lagarta saiu do ‘’casulo’’ feito de erva seca e daí tirei a foto. Depois disso nunca mais as vi saírem do ‘’casulo’’ pensei que já estavam mortas. Quando voltei a casa 1 mês depois, encontrei 2 ainda na mesma intactas e outra mais ou menos aberta, mas com uma pequenina borboleta preta perto. Eu procurei e comentei sobre esta espécie que tem um ciclo de vida diferente (bem já estou a começar a ficar acostumado a ciclos de vida diferentes).
As fêmeas são exactamente como as larvas, e o macho é o único que voa. Eu nunca peguei mais naquela caixa até à alguns dias atrás quando vi mais de 100 lagartinhas de Psyche casta. Então isto é o que penso que poderá ter acontecido. Das 3 que encontrei, 2 eram fêmeas e uma era o macho. Uma vez que se encontrava dentro da caixa, o macho acabou por fecundar as fêmeas e então morrer posteriormente. Mais tarde nasceram assim as Psyche casta.
Assim, decidi fazer este post. Estou a fotografar o processo completo das 100 Psyche casta das quais penso libertar metade ou mais no local onde encontrei, e espero no futuro publicar no meu outro blog esta espécie com mais detalhe e melhores fotos.
