Spilarctia luteum aka Buff Ermine

Found the caterpillar in a silk, in a nettle, going out for eat the leafs for its diet. I fed it with nettle, but I searched and found out it would also eat Plantago, so I fed also with it, which happily ate. After sometime, it buried itself just a bit, and made a silk cocoon, which inside has the pupa. Several weeks later the Beautiful moth appears. One of my favorites so far.


Encontrei a lagarta numa folha de urtiga com seda, saindo para comer as folhas para a sua dieta. Alimentei-a com urtigas, mas procurei e reparei que esta também se alimentava de Plantago, então também alimentei com esta, na qual comeu bastante. Depois de algum tempo de crescimento, enterrou-se um pouco e criou um casulo de seda castanho, e dentro fez a sua pupa. Algumas semanas depois emerge uma linda mariposa. Uma das minhas favoritas desta família.

Pleuroptya ruralis aka Mother of Pearl  is a beautiful moth found in most European countries. The larvae fed on Urtica dioica, which rolled up, and ate the other leafs and always returned to the rolled up leaf. It was very interesting, and the generations afterward always do the same. Made this caterpillar very interesting to the point of being a bit different on its behavior. After it makes few silk net, and makes the pupa, which hatches later and does this interesting moth.

Pleuroptya ruralis é uma mariposa encontrada na maioria dos países europeus. A lagarta alimentou-se de Urtica dioica, na qual enrola-se na folha e sai posteriormente para se alimentar, e volta sempre para a folha em que se enrola. Foi interessante ver o seu processo, e a geração seguinte fará sempre este processo. O que faz desta espécie ter uma lagarta interessante, pelo ponto de vista de ser diferente neste aspecto e comportamento. Depois a lagarta faz uma espécie de casulo, com um pouco de seda, mas não muito, e faz a pupa, na qual eclode alguns dias depois e dá esta mariposa interessante.

Psilogaster loti



Psilogaster loti is an interesting moth which is very weird on their flying. I found the caterpillar feeding on Cistus sp.  and I decided to create again the moth. Although, by mistake, I didn't bring the cocoon with me, the result was its death. The female on stress, produced un-fecundated eggs which contain no larvae at all. This is the result of my mistake.

Psilogaster loti é uma mariposa engraçada na sua maneira de voar, pois voa muito mal sendo fácil de avistar e é muitas vezes atraída para a luz. Encontrei a lagarta a alimentar-se em Cistus sp. e decidi criar novamente uma desta espécie. Contudo, por esquecimento, não levei comigo o casulo quando estive de férias, o que causou a morte da mesma. A fêmea eclodida, foi exposta a stress e produziu ovos não fecundados que não contêm nada no seu interior. Este foi o resultado do meu esquecimento.

Plutella xylostella aka Diamondback moth

Summer chose to be long this year so this month hatched just today. Diamondback moth is a tiny moth which is considered a plague for the crops, especially for the cabbages and similar. It was not hard to me find a caterpillar, although at the first time I thought it was not the one because it was very small and different from the pictures I found out over the internet. It fed on turnip leaf, and I just got a sample. It fed on only 1 leaf. It dag some holes for eating and grew very fast. Then It made a silk cocoon. And now it is an adult moth.  All plagues for me, are not plagues since I love moths and butterflies. We need to control them it’s true, but I can avoid the beauty in a beast.

Plutella xylostella

O Verão parece querer durar este ano, então esta não hibernou e acabou de eclodir. Esta mariposa é minúscula, e é considerada praga para as hortas de couves e nabiças especialmente. Não me foi de todo difícil encontrar a lagarta, contudo fiquei recetivo pelo facto que a larva no inicio parecia me um pouco diferente das que encontrava na internet. Alimentou-se apenas de uma folha de nabiça-couve (contudo não comeu a folha toda, faz buracos, o que leva a estragar as folhas das colheitas por sua vez), e cresceu bastante rápido. Fez um casulo de seda, e a pupa encontrava-se dentro ‘’protegida’’. E agora encontra-se como adulto. Nem tudo é praga para mim uma vez que amo borboletas e mariposas. Apenas precisamos de controlare-las, verdade, mas eu não consigo evitar a beleza numa besta.

Emmelina monodactyla aka Morning-glory Plume Moth

This is probably one of the most common plume moths over the country. I've always had this fascination about this moth because it was different than the other ones, about the wings and about the ''format'' of itself.
I've found the caterpillar on my yard feeding in Convolvulus sp. which I maintained feeding of these. The caterpillar was relatively small and made a strange pupa. I thought it was dead till it hatch some days ago.

Esta é provavelmente uma das traças desta família mais comum no país. Eu sempre fui fascinado por esta mariposa por causa do seu aspecto ser bastante diferente das outras e pelo formato das asas.
Encontrei a lagarta a alimentar-se no meu quintal em Convolvus sp. , na qual mantive a sua alimentação da mesma espécie de planta. A lagarta era relativamente pequena, e fez uma pupa bastante estranha. Eu pensei que estava morta até ter eclodido à uns dias.

Maybe one of the most strange moth I've ever found. Not for saying it is a rare specie, the larvae is found feeding on Genista sp.  I've found many of them, and I've saved some, which eventually most of them ended up as female. We can see which one is male or female. The male flies, and it's black. The female, just get's out of its cocoon and stays there waiting for the male. The female has no wings and no need to feed. Just waits the male to mate and then make a new generation.
None of my larvae were male, the male was found nearby when I gave my already ''pregnant'' female, which I caught thinking it was just a larvae. The little larvae I set them free where I've found the other females and larvae. Hopefully I'll find more of this next year. 


Heterogynis cf. penella 

Talvez uma das traças mais estranhas que encontrei. Nem comentando o facto de ser uma espécie rara. A larva pode ser encontrada a alimentar-se de Genista sp.  Eu encontrei muitas lagartas, e guardei algumas, que eventualmente todas eram fêmeas. É fácil distinguir o macho da fêmea. O macho é uma borboleta normal, preta, enquanto que a fêmea, sai do casulo, e fica à espera do macho. A fêmea não tem asas e nem necessita de se alimentar. Ela apenas espera o macho para acasalarem e fazerem uma nova geração.
Nenhuma das minhas lagartas era macho, o que encontrei estava nas redondezas quando eu libertei a minha fêmea já ''gravida'' quando a apanhei como casulo. As larvas como eram muitas libertei-as no local onde encontrei as fêmeas. Espero no próximo período encontrar mais.
