Maybe one of the most strange moth I've ever found. Not for saying it is a rare specie, the larvae is found feeding on Genista sp.  I've found many of them, and I've saved some, which eventually most of them ended up as female. We can see which one is male or female. The male flies, and it's black. The female, just get's out of its cocoon and stays there waiting for the male. The female has no wings and no need to feed. Just waits the male to mate and then make a new generation.
None of my larvae were male, the male was found nearby when I gave my already ''pregnant'' female, which I caught thinking it was just a larvae. The little larvae I set them free where I've found the other females and larvae. Hopefully I'll find more of this next year.

Talvez uma das traças mais estranhas que encontrei. Nem comentando o facto de ser uma espécie rara. A larva pode ser encontrada a alimentar-se de Genista sp.  Eu encontrei muitas lagartas, e guardei algumas, que eventualmente todas eram fêmeas. É fácil distinguir o macho da fêmea. O macho é uma borboleta normal, preta, enquanto que a fêmea, sai do casulo, e fica à espera do macho. A fêmea não tem asas e nem necessita de se alimentar. Ela apenas espera o macho para acasalarem e fazerem uma nova geração.
Nenhuma das minhas lagartas era macho, o que encontrei estava nas redondezas quando eu libertei a minha fêmea já ''gravida'' quando a apanhei como casulo. As larvas como eram muitas libertei-as no local onde encontrei as fêmeas. Espero no próximo período encontrar mais.

From Psychidae to Momphidae

Eis uma coisa que não estava à espera. Desde o inicio que tive esta lagarta, pensei logo que seria Psychidae, e a verdade é que a lagarta apresentava todas as características. O tempo passou e a lagarta alimentou-se de ervas e acabou por fazer o casulo. Contudo, um dia antes de aparecer a borboleta, a larva sai do casulo e aparentemente parece morta, mas mais tarde uma borboleta está lá.
Isto deixa-me confuso, pois penso que a lagarta realmente morreu (devido talvez a não ter conseguido sobreviver, no reino animal nem todas as espécies que são de nascer de ovos, nem todos chegam à etapa final) e numa das folhas, que tinha um pouco do caule, dentro dele estaria o casulo de Momphidae .
Momphidae e Psychidae ambos são Lepidoptera, mas são familias totalmente diferentes... Por isso ficarei na  duvida até um dia encontrar outra lagarta de Psychidae e ver do que lá sairá.


Now that's something I wasn't waiting for. From the beginning I had this caterpillar, and I thought it would be Psychidae, and the truth is that the caterpillar shows the characteristics for is own. Time passed and the caterpillar fed on leafs and ended up making the cocoon. However, a day before the moth hatching, the larva  gets out of the cocoon and appears dead and later this moth appears.
This makes me a bit confused, because I really think the caterpillar died ( with unknown reasons, but not all eggs can make it, I mean not all caterpillars can make it from eggs) and in the box, the last leafs had a bit of the steam, which probably might have had the pupa from Momphidae moth.
Momphidae and Psychidae are both Lepidoptera, although very different families... So i'll have to stay thinking, and hoping to find later another Psychidae caterpillar and see what gets out of it.
